Defending advocacy and dissent: a long-term strategy

Join us, in solidarity with the conference "Indignez-Vous! Hope in Resistance" for a discussion about strategy to defend our rights to dissent, advocacy and democratic space in Canada.

- What are the concerns regarding possible violations of our rights to dissent and advocacy in the next 4 years?
- What has the Voices-Voix documentation project so far told us about violations to human rights and the health of our democratic space?
- How can we use our vast collective network to bring our research to the wider Canadian public, and mobilize Canadians to hold their government accountable?

A Day for Democracy

On Wednesday, April 6th 2011, in a number of cities across Canada, organizations that have come together as part of the Voices-Voix Coalition organized a variety of events under the banner A Day for Democracy. These events had the common purpose of encouraging Canadians to discuss democracy, free speech and transparency in Canada, and more importantly how we can defend these values and traditions, both in the short and long-term. The spirit of the events was the belief that despite the failures of the current government, and of numerous governments before it, to respect our democratic traditions and the will of the People, we can, if united and active, hold our elected representatives to account.

Release of the Voices-Voix Declaration

The Voices-Voix Declaration was released to the media at a press conference on Parliament Hill on June 17th, 2010. It was drafted by a number of people who had attended the Coalition's first gathering in April 2010. They saw a need for a document that that summarized teh concerns we had expressed about about government attacks on our democratic rights, especially the rights to free speech, transparency and equality.

Meeting of Canadians Concerned for Democracy

The founding event of the Voices-Voix Coalition took place on April 21st, 2010, at the headquarters of the Public Service Alliance of Canada in Ottawa. At the time, the Coalition didn't yet exist. It was a spontaneous meeting of over 100 people - concerned Canadians, and representatives of Canadian organizations - from women's groups, unions, First Nations groups, immigrant rights groups, gay and lesbian organizations, the international development sector, and others. We came together because we were all concerned about attacks on our democratic rights by our own government - especially the rights to free speech, transparent government, and equality.
