19 January 2017 - UPDATE - The Liberal election platform promised to make substantial changes to the Access to Information Act to modernize the process by making it cheaper, more accessible, and broader in scope. The changes that have been made thus far can be viewed as tiny first steps.

Public Science

The previous federal Conservative government waged a systematic assault on public science. ​The assault included the natural and social sciences. It was not restricted to government scientists, but ran the full gamut of organizations connected to scientific research: government departments, at arms-length government funded organizations, organizations that funded other research, universities, NGOs and individual researchers who obtained grants through one of the funding agencies, and even included a UN convention conducting research relevant to climate change.

Environmental groups

The current federal government’s hostility toward environmental groups is well documented. Since coming to power in 2006, the Conservative government has defunded and attempted to discredit several environmental research and advocacy groups. They have positioned environmentalists as a threat to Canadian security.

Thalidomiders

On 1 December 2014, the House of Commons, responding to a New Democratic Party-led motion, voted unanimously to offer “full support” to the Canadian victims of thalidomide.

Dr. Mustafa Barghouti

Dr. Mustafa Barghouti planned a three-day speaking tour of Canada in March 2010, co-organized by Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME). His visa was not issued on time, forcing him to cancel the tour, though it was rescheduled and took place two months later. CJPME accused the government of intentionally issuing the visa late.

Environment Canada

Beginning in 2006, the Harper government eliminated funding to a number of climate change and environmental programs. Cuts to Environment Canada’s budgets and staff have continued through 2013, with a large number of jobs being eliminated in the 2011 budget. These cuts have significantly impacted Environment Canada’s research and knowledge production capacity.
