DEMOCRACY: Our Way of Life

In Canada, we believe in protecting the strength of our democracy.

We know that the strength of our democracy depends on three critical factors: free speech, equality, and transparency.

Free speech is essential for democracy because without free speech, we cannot criticize the government's bad decisions, propose alternatives, and decide collectively as a country which policies would be most beneficial to all of us.

Transparency is essential for democracy because if the government is not transparent, we cannot make effective judgments about whether government policies are good or bad, or make our criticisms of government decisions effective, or propose better alternatives.

Equality is essential for democracy because no government can be seen as legitimate if its governance is unfair, its decisions arbitrary or partisan, or if it is too weak to accommodate the diversity of citizen voices.

When the government disregards the rights to advocacy and dissent, free speech, transparency, equality, and democracy in general are compromised.

Let's work together to defend the rights to advocacy and dissent, and ensure the strength of our democracy.
