Job Offer: Communications Coordinator for Voices-Voix
Position: Communications Coordinator
Start date: July 21, 2014, negotiable
Duration: 6-month consultant contract, renewable
Number of hours per week: Part-time, 15-20 hours per week
Location: Montreal or Ottawa, preferably

Voices-Voix is seeking a part-time Communications Coordinator. We are looking for an individual who has knowledge of the human rights and social justice sector in Canada, and an understanding of the challenges faced by advocacy and nonprofit organizations in the country. The person must be organized, bilingual, reliable, able to work both autonomously and collaboratively, and has some experience in organizing and/or communications. This is an excellent opportunity to develop networks and gain experience in a rapidly changing civil society context in Canada.
Description of organization:
Voices-Voix is a non-partisan coalition of individuals and organizations committed to defending our collective and individual rights to dissent, advocacy and democratic space. The Voices-Voix coalition was founded on April 21, 2010 and has more than 200 member-organizations across Canada.
Voices-Voix is committed to the documentation of attacks against civil society, individuals, and institutions that have raised their voices, to show the pattern of the federal government silencing dissent in Canada. The coalition’s core activity is the online publication of the Documentation Project. Voices-Voix also seeks to promote debate among the public about how to defend democratic space in Canada, through participation in events and online communication. www.voices-voix.ca
- Work closely with the Editorial Board to keep track of research produced and ensure online publication of case studies on the Voices-Voix website
- Monitor the news and curate relevant stories for publication on the website and for the Editorial Board’s research
- Maintain and update a database of case studies for the Documentation Project
- Facilitate discussions among the Steering Committee members so as to advance the coalition’s goals. Set-up telephone and in-person meetings, prepare agenda, take minutes, etc.
- Recruit and supervise interns (if/when needed, for social media, translation and other needs)
- Update and back up the internal organizational tools so as to ensure durability of the coalition’s work and institutional memory
- Manage the coalition’s social media platforms, using Facebook and Twitter effectively
- Maintain the Voices-Voix listserv, develop and maintain contact lists, respond with timeliness to incoming emails and phone calls
- Reach out to mainstream media (writing and editing press releases, contacting journalists, liaising for interviews) when decided with the Steering Committee
- Ensure the quality of content and visuals on the website, the publication of case studies, news articles and reports
- Ensure that all external communication and website material is in both French and English
- Update and translate some Documentation Project case studies in French or English
- Promote existing written and audio-visual material to raise awareness of the coalition’s work and expertise
Networking and partners:
- Monitor developments in the wider coalition and the progressive movement in Canada
- Seek to engage and expand the coalition’s membership base
- Support Voices-Voix’s presence at events and public speaking opportunities
- A background in political science, law, journalism, communications or other social sciences
- 1-2 year experience in a social justice organization in Canada
- Extensive knowledge of the current Canadian political landscape (non-profit and human rights sectors, federal policy shifts and trends in domestic advocacy work)
- Understanding of the mandate and values of Voices-Voix
- Bilingual in both French and English (written and oral)
- Excellent organizational and administrative skills
- Self-starter, autonomous and reliable
- Good interpersonal and supervision skills
- Experience managing social media platforms
- Comfortable with distance work and a virtual work environment
- Attention to details and proven ability to multitask
- Knowledge of MS office, Google docs and other online work tools
Compensation: 15$/hour, part-time (15-20 hours per week), self-employed contract (no benefits)

Location: The Coordinator may work from the offices of partner organizations in Montreal (Alternatives) or Ottawa (Amnesty International Canada) and may also work from home. A major part of the work and correspondence is done over email, phone and Skype.
Schedule: Unless specified, the Coordinator is free to decide when these weekly hours are contributed, with a preference toward Monday-Friday 9am-5pm (subject to adjustment depending on the host office). Occasional travel to Ottawa may be requested.
Supervision and work environment: The Coordinator works with and reports to the Steering Committee. The Coordinator understands that, as the only part-time paid staff for Voices-Voix, this position requires flexibility and a willingness to work with minimal supervision.
