Political parties called on to make 8 pledges for democracy, transparency, freedom of expression.
After years of diminishing democratic space for dissent in Canada, Voices-Voix – a non-partisan coalition of over 200 Canadian organizations – is proposing 8 clear ways to defend democracy and human rights, and ensure that the voices of Canadians are informed, heard, can speak, and are respected.
At a news conference at 10am on Tuesday, April 5th, 2011, Voices-Voix will call on all of Canada’s federal political parties to make eight (8) clear pledges for action to protect democracy and human rights.
Voices-Voix will also launch a new website, and call on Canadians to attend events in cities across Canada on April 6th as part of a national Day for Democracy. At these events, citizens and civil society will discuss action to defend democracy, free speech and transparency, both during election season and long-term.
The Quebec-based coalition, Pas de démocratie sans voix! will also hold a simultaneous press conference on similar issues in Quebec city.
