Page’s independence has embarrassed this government before, on the cost of the Afghanistan mission, the price of its tough-on-crime provisions, the hidden costs of the F-35 fighter jet procurement. (...) But this week, when he released a legal opinion maintaining the government was breaking its own law by withholding details from him on departmental spending cuts — and threatening to settle matters in court — the Conservatives no longer hid their pique.
