UN Human Rights Committee to review Canada’s rights record

Next week, the United Nations Human Rights Committee will be reviewing Canada's record on civil and political rights for the first time since 2006. Read on for the details from the United Nations on this important review.

UN Human Rights Committee to review Canada’s rights record

GENEVA (1 July 2015) – Canada’s human rights record will be reviewed by the UN Human Rights Committee on Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 July.     

As one of the 168 States Parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), Canada is required to undergo regular review by the Committee of 18 international independent experts on how it is implementing the ICCPR. The Committee members will engage in a dialogue with a delegation from the Canadian Government on a range of issues relating to the Covenant. 

Date and time: 7 July from 15:00 – 18:00 (09:00 -12:00 in Ottawa); 8 July from 10:00 – 13:00 (04:00 – 07:00) 
Venue: Palais Wilson in Geneva 

Canada has submitted a report to the Committee on the implementation of its human rights obligations, and a number of non-governmental organisations have also sent reports for the Committee’s consideration. A news conference is scheduled for Thursday 23 July at 13.30 at Palais des Nations in Geneva  to discuss the Committee’s concluding observations on Canada and the other countries being reviewed – Venezuela, the UK, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Spain, Uzbekistan and France.
